A convoy transporting Deputy President David Mabuza was involved in a deadly crash in Mpumalanga which claimed one life.
Police have confirmed that one of the Deputy President’s bodyguards was killed when a tyre reportedly burst, causing the vehicle to overturn.
SAPS said it is saddened by the loss of one of its members who was travelling in one of Mabuza’s backup vehicles.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said Mabuza’s bodyguard was declared dead on scene while the other two were transported to hospital.
The accident occurred on Sunday morning, around 10h30 in Middleburg, Mpumalanga. Two other occupants of the vehicle were also injured and are currently in hospital.
According to reports, Mabuza was in another vehicle and was unharmed. It is reported that Mabuza was on his way to the OR Tambo International Airport.
In July, Mabuza’s convoy was involved in another accident in Midrand, which he also escaped unharmed.
Police are said to be investigating a case of culpable homicide.
