The General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa (Giwusa) has called for the abolition of royalty in SA because of the exorbitant costs that falls on taxpayers.
Giwusa says King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s coronation ceremony cost millions of Rands, and was nothing more than a “childish pomp.”
In a statement, Giwusa exposed the lavish lifestyles of the Zulu and South African royal families, and the amounts are a stark comparison to the devastating living conditions by the majority of the Zulu working class.
Since his recognition in March, King Misuzulu has been getting an annual salary of R 1 277 116. This falls in line with handouts for Kings in terms of the government report on public servants.
“In addition, the Zulu royal household received R66 million from the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government. This splashing out on the Zulu royal household allocation is used to maintain and cater for six royal palaces, including a fleet of luxury royal cars, payment of royal aides, praise singers, school fees for royal children in the country’s top schools, amongst others.
Although the Zulu royal family is the most prominent, it is by no means the sole parasite on the public fiscus and the working class people of the country.
Other royals include, Xhosas, Pedi, and Ndebele across the country’s landscape, and all royal households cost the public fiscus billions in undeserved salaries and benefits.”
