Fresh from dropping his new album Alakine World, South African wordsmith Reason, now Sizwe Alakine joins 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka.
Speaking about switching to Amapiano, Sizwe Alakine says he found his pocket in the sound.
“It is something that takes a while as an artist. Even as Reason, it took a while to get to Do It Like I Can.“
The rebrand was not something he had planned.
“In the beginning, I was falling out of love with Hip hop. I wasn’t really enjoying myself and I wasn’t hitting the market. I did a lot of acting and songwriting which I was enjoying at the time.
“Piano is something I stumbled upon and I was playing a lot of the music.”
The more Sizwe heard the sound, the more he wanted to experiment with it.
It brought back fond memories of the music he used to listen to in his childhood.
“It’s the feeling I got when I was listening to the likes of Kabelo. Zola and Magesh.”
Amapiano has offered him an outlet to be 100% true to himself.
“Reason was something I built around the fundamentals of Hip Hop.”
Addressing the backlash he’s received since joining Amapiano, the musician says people in Hip Hop are hypocrites.
“People in Hip Hop have been comfortable exploring other genres. Drake has explored so many different sounds but with Amapiano it’s a big debate. Which is the part that I don’t understand.”
