JHB Pride will go ahead as planned despite the US terror alert which was sent out on Wednesday, 26 October.
Pride organisers made an announcement on Thursday, informing the public that the event will not be cancelled or postponed because they’ve “assessed” the situation.
In their statement organisers said there are a number of other large public events taking place in Sandton this weekend and the pride itself had not directly been targeted.
“We have consulted with various entities, and at this point: postponing pride is hard, proceeding with pride is hard and deciding whether or not to attend is a hard decision.”
JHB Pride is set to take place on Saturday, 29 October and will be the 33rd edition of the march.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to the US’ warning of a planned terror attack in Sandton, saying he was disappointed at how the US government went about the warning.
“It was quite unfortunate that the US government issued that type of warning without having had a deep-dive type of discussion with us. It is unfortunate that another government should issue such a threat as to send panic among our people. The authorities are working to verify the threat, and the government will issue an alert if needs be.”
