Seputla Sebogodi has said that actors who can’t speak IsiZulu must prepare to starve in South Africa.
Award-winning veteran actor Seputla said during a podcast interview with David Mashabela on Youtube that Zulu language proficiency is a must for employment in the entertainment business.
He claims that the majority of production companies are from KZN and that Zulu actors are in high demand.
Additionally, Seputla asserts that there are no soap operas in South Africa without Zulu speakers.
He said “Please check this, all the soapies, all the soapies. This year I said no to five soapies or drama series. I said no. Because you ask me, you ask me, ‘can you speak Zulu’?
“My brother, if you can’t speak Zulu be prepared to starve. Tell me one soapie without Zulu’s, I will give you a million (Rand).
“In South Africa if you can’t speak Zulu, you are as good as scrambled eggs. It’s a big thing.”
Additionally, he said that the fact that he does not speak Zulu has cost him five opportunities to work in the acting business.
