The South African Weather Service has issued an alert warning as destructive rains persist throughout the week. With Mpumalanga, KZN and Limpopo being the hardest hit, they move to a category orange (level 5) warning. With Gauteng being placed under an alert level 4 warning.
Non-stop, heavy rains have dampened the start of the week, causing flooding across parts of the country. The severity of the thunderstorms took another casualty last week when a man in Sophiatown was struck by lightning, killing him instantly.
Apart from informal settlements in low-lying areas of Gauteng, there has been no other casualties. However, motorists are urged to exercise caution as flooding is likely.
The rainy conditions have being ongoing since Tropical Cyclone Eloise made its way to the country from Mozambique last week. Leaving over 314 000 people picking up the pieces after being displaced due to floods.
Apart from affecting driving conditions, the rain has left many farms waterlogged and some bridges submerged. SA Weather Service predicts the weather finally clearing on Monday, 8th February.
