The ANC has rejected the DA’s motion for an ad hoc Phala Phala committee to investigate charges against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa who is meant to answer questions by members of Parliament relating to the Phala Phala scandal on Thursday, 29 September, has received full backing by the ruling party.
While all opposition parties voted in favour of the ad hoc Phala Phala committee, the ANC and the Good Party were opposed to it.
The DA says the ANC has once again failed in its Constitutional obligations by protecting Ramaphosa and his cabinet from accountability and scrutiny about alleged abuse of public resources.
“History will judge every MP who voted against accountability harshly. In effect, a vote against this motion was a clear message to the people of South Africa that there are a set of rules for the ANC and the politically connected; while there is a different set of rules for ordinary people.”
The DA will in the coming weeks keep a close eye on the work of the Section 89 panel which will look at the allegations against the President.
The so-called independent panel will make a determination on whether there are grounds for impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa.
