On what would have been Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s 86th birthday, Cyril Ramaphosa shared plans to turn the struggle stalwart’s Soweto home into a museum.
Addressing ANC supporters at a rally to mark Mam’ Winnie’s birthday, Ramaphosa said another “Vilakazi Street” will be on the cards for Soweto.
8115 Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, Soweto was where former President, Nelson Mandela lived between 1946 and 1962.
Now, 4-years since her passing on 02 April 2018, the ANC have decided to turn Mam’ Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s home into a memorial and museum.
“The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela memorial and museum will celebrate narratives of South African women, open up space for new perspectives and inspire the next generation of African leaders.
Today we honour not only Mam’ Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, but we honour all those women who were fearless, all those women who were courageous, all those women who made a selfless contribution towards our struggle for liberation. Through you, her spirit lives on.”

President Ramaphosa said the ANC will never forget what Mam’ Winnie sacrificed for both the party and the country.
“She worked for the people of our country. More than many others we can think of, that is what she did. That was her talent, Mama was gifted and she let everyone into her heart. And that is why we will always remember her.”
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was arrested, spent 16-months in detention, faced numerous trials, banished from her home, kept away from her children and loved ones, held in solitary confinement, tortured and interrogated continuously without breaks by the apartheid run regime.
She died in hospital after suffering a long illness on 02 April 2018 at the age of 81.
