Gauteng Premier David Makhura denies reports that he was forced out of office after he expressed his intent to resign from his post.
Makhura announced on Sunday, 04 September that he would be stepping down as Premier saying he is ready to hand over the role.
“It is not a recall, it is a transitional handover process.”
David Makhura insisted he was not forced to step down
This after reports suggest that the ANC in Gauteng’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) decided to recall Makhura.
While a date for Makhura’s resignation has not been confirmed, it is expected that newly elected ANC Provincial Chairperson, and Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi will take over the role.
Lesufi was voted Chairperson at the ANC’s 14th Provincial Elective Conference, which makes him the ideal candidate for the position of Gauteng Premier.
Makhura says he wants to continue working in provincial government.
“I am eight years into this job, and I will continue to do this work. But I am interested in ensuring that the provincial government will enter the next phase. As soon as they say they have completed that process, I will be ready to hand over to the next premier.”
