Gauteng police are on the hunt for two men who shot at a mother and her two children in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon.
The mother remains in a critical condition after being airlifted to hospital but her 9-year old son unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Police say the shooting took place outside the Turkish Mosque in Midrand, after the mother had picked up her children from the Nizamiye Primary and High School, which is situated near the mosque.
The woman’s 13-year old daughter fortunately escaped unharmed, and a motive for the shooting is unclear at this stage.
Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo said the two gunmen sped off in a vehicle which was parked nearby.
There were six gunshots to the mother’s VW Polo, and the shooting took place just 100m from the mosque’s entrance.
The 9-year old boy was in Grade 3 and his sister is in Grade 7 at the school. She is said to be safe with relatives and as the circumstances around the shooting is unknown, her identity is being protected due to safety.
Police have asked for anyone with information around the shooting to come forward. A case of murder and attempted murder is being investigated.
