Eskom has issued a loadshedding alert, informing South Africans that Stage 2 may come into effect on Tuesday, 02 August.
According to the power utility Stage 2 will need to be implemented over the next three days to account for the shortage of generation capacity.
News of further rolling blackouts comes after Eskom’s Energy Crisis Committee met on Monday, 01 August to discuss it’s $24 billion debt and the power crisis in the country.
While the South African government is said to be taking on Eskom’s mounting debt, the embattled state-owned entity says it simply cannot keep up with demand.
“The delay in returning a generation unit to service at Arnot, Kusile and Koeberg, and failures at Medupi, Hendrina, Camden and two units at Majuba, have exacerbated the capacity constraints. Some generation units at other power stations are expected to return to service over the next few days.”
The latest bout loadshedding alert comes after two months of non-stop Stage 6 blackouts which further crippled the economy.
Stage 6 loadshedding costs the country R4 billion a day.
