The situation in Tembisa remains tense, as the death toll climbs to 4. This follows violent clashes between residents of Tembisa and police which escalated on Monday, 01 August.
Residents have been protesting against rising municipal rates and a lack of service delivery relating to electricity.
One man was reportedly shot and killed by a police nyala vehicle on Monday.
Police claim to have been using rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, however the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), confirms live ammunition was used.
The deceased man’s family want answers from police as to why their loved one was shot and killed, as he did not, according to witnesses pose a threat.
He was reportedly shot twice in the back.
Another 3 deaths were confirmed on Tuesday, 02 August, however there is no information available as to the cause of death.
Residents of Tembisa say they will continue with their protests until Ekhuruleni Mayor, Tania Campbell, gives the community answers to their grievances by Friday.
Campbell met with some members of the Tembisa Community Forum on Monday to discuss the issues that sparked the protest action.
Roads in and around Tembisa remain obstructed by rocks and burning tyres.
A municipality customer care centre and several municipal and private vehicles were set alight in Monday’s protests.
Police say they will continue to monitor the situation in Tembisa.
