Mpumalanga-born DJ, producer, and radio presenter Emotionz DJ shares his ‘Intention’ or Inhloso with DJ Keyez on the Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30.
Humphrey Owethu Mpila, grew up in Ekangala in Bronkhorspruit, and he’s been pushing multiple revenue streams to get by.
One thing that the Covid-19 pandemic taught him is that you cannot put all your eggs in one basket. Becoming a father meant he had to provide one way or another, and when music wasn’t making him money, his passion for cars did.
“I loved cars from a very young age, that’s where the passion came from. I’m a huge F1 fan and I’m also passionate about modifying cars. My company Car Gadgets SA, specialises in world class vehicle customisation.”
In 2018, the amapiano artist was abducted and hijacked in Tembisa when he was picking up his girlfriend.
“Two guys came up to me and I didn’t even see them coming, the car doors were unlocked, you know, because I know the hood. So, I didn’t even think anything of it. Next thing I know I was in the boot and they were driving around with my car, pulling off other smash and grabs and trying to take other cars. I was in the boot for about 4 hours.”
Thankfully, his hijackers let him go but he lost his car. He was told to run and the men fired shots in the air while he ran. The entire ordeal was the worst experience he’s endured, and thoughout the ordeal he was convinced he was going to die.

His love for music was largely influenced by his dad. The family moved to Johannesburg when he was in Grade 8 and although there was the push to excel in school, music was always something that found him.
“I started of doing mixes on Alex FM and then moved to co-host a show. But it’s no longer my thing, I’m just focused on pushing my sound and creating my own music.”
Emotionz DJ shares with DJ Keyez
The artist who inked a deal with Sony Music Entertainment Africa last year has a hit currently on the Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30.
Inhloso features Soa Mattrix and Murumba Pitch, and is an apology song from a gent to his girl. While he wouldn’t say if the song is from personal experience, he did share that most men only admit they were wrong when it’s too late.
“The song is about a guy who messed up in his relationship. He hurt the woman he loves and now that he’s realised what he lost, he’s trying to get her back. He’s trying to convince her that it wasn’t his intention (inhloso) to hurt her and is hoping she’ll forgive him.”
