The City of Johannesburg has given its Metrobus company R60 million to purchase new buses in the upcoming fiscal year.
The new buses were purchased, according to Transport MMC Funzela Ngobeni, as part of a longer-term plan to update the organization’s fleet.
Although a bus’s useful life is generally regarded to be 12 years, due to prior financial difficulties, Metrobus now has a sizable number of vehicles that are functioning beyond 15 years and even up to 21 years.

Ngobeni said the city pledges to look for a long-term solution to close the funding gap between requested and allocated money.
“Owing to budgetary constraints affecting every government sphere, department and entity, I recognise that the changes I have been entrusted to oversee at Metrobus will have to be incremental but I am confident that we will make progress in improving Johannesburg residents’ experience of Metrobus’ services,” Ngobeni says.

Beginning in the current fiscal year, 2022–2023, the planning procedure for the acquisition of the new buses will get underway.
35 buses were renovated during the 2021/22 fiscal year, costing R19.7 million out of an R20 million budget. The majority of Metrobus journeys are presently run using these buses.
The next fiscal year includes an additional R22 million that will be used to renovate additional buses.
