Julie Suddaby, a member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) in charge of finance, sponsored an engagement session on Monday (13 June) during which businesses asked the city to re-imagine a 24-hour city in order to unleash prospects.
Members of the property, investment, and business sectors believe that a 24-hour work day in Johannesburg might open up many new options for efficiency, growth, and employment.

Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, chairperson of the National Property Practitioners Council about what this will mean for the city.

Ramokgopa says in the last 10 years there’s been an exodus of big capital leaving the inner city.
She also said that this is nothing new and that many cities around the world have adopted a similar approach.
“The discussion took place in the context of the new mayoral priorities, of the mayor of Joburg. Which spoke to creating an inclusive city, and making the city a business-friendly city.”
“One of the key elements that we raised from a sector perspective was the importance of engaging property developers in that journey because property developers and the property industry are critical in the development journey and need to be part of that urban design and urban development.”
She also added that Johannesburg has no choice but to work. It is critical for the government, businesses, and stakeholders to recognize the need of making changes.
Ramokgopa, also said that there are a lot of abandoned manufacturing structures in previous industrial regions.
