Lightweight boxer, Simiso Buthelezi has died after suffering a brain injury during a fight over the weekend.
On Sunday, 5 June, Buthelezi made headlines after footage of him getting disoriented and punching thin air was shared.
Simiso Buthelezi, a lightweight boxer, is undergoing medical care after worryingly punching thin air in the final round of his most recent boxing match, seconds before his victory.
In a shocking twist of the event, Buthelezi was believed to be comfortably beating Siphesihle Mntungwa late in the 10th and final round for his WBF African lightweight title fight against Siphesihle Mntungwa when his opponent slipped through the ropes.
When Buthelezi appeared to lose his bearings, Mntungwa regained his footing and was ready to resume the fight.
Towards the end of his fight, Buthelezi collapsed and was rushed to a hospital in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Doctors soon discovered that the 24-year old boxer had sustained a brain injury, which resulted in internal bleeding.
While he received the best possible care, Simiso Buthelezi succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night, 07 June in hospital.
In a joint statement released by his family and Boxing South Africa, the association plans on conducting its own medical review of his injuries.
“The Buthelezi family and Boxing SA will in due course make an announcement on funeral arrangements. Boxing South Africa will make public the results of the medical review.”
