The city’s poor air quality is not a new occurrence and there have been ongoing discussions on how to lessen the blow on residents.
According to the World Health Organization, around 20 000 South Africans died as a result of air pollution in 2013.
In 2021, the city was overcome by a foul odour that prompted various health concerns. A week passed with the same odour.
