The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) elective congress has announced its new office bearers and Zwelinzima Vavi emerged victorious.
In the early hours of Thursday morning, Vavi kept his job as general secretary of the trade union federation at its second national conference in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.
After 689 votes, he defeated Moses Mantsoe and salvaged his career in the labour federation.

Moses Mantsoe received 300 votes, while Vavi received 389 votes.
Vavi and his followers have been at odds with Saftu’s largest union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), which spent most of Wednesday campaigning for the four suspended national office bearers to be permitted to run in the elections.
Ruth Ntlokotse was elected president, Moredi Mosina was elected second president, and Nontembeko Luziph was elected Deputy General Secretary, giving his slate four of the six leadership positions.
