New Gautrain routes are currently underway which aims to expand the rail network, providing an alternative commuter service for people.
The decision was made by the Gauteng Provincial government which confirmed the project expansion on Wednesday, 25 May.
MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mambolo, said the plan was passed because the Gautrain is one of the province’s success stories.
The new routes includes Randburg, Little Falls and Cosmo City and further details about Phase 1 of the new Gautrain routes will be made available in the coming week.
“Planning of the proposed Gauteng Rapid Rail Network Extensions (GRRIN) project is underway. The project has made significant progress and I’m pleased to inform you that Cabinet has endorsed the Preliminary Route Alignment study for Phase 1 of the proposed GRRIN extensions and an official announcement and details will be made in the coming week.”

The MEC was presenting his budget plans and talked about the impact the pandemic has had on the Gautrain.
New Gautrain routes
Phase 1 of the proposed plan has been published in the Gauteng Provincial Gazette and is open to public comment until July 2021.
The new routes will include:
- Little Falls Station on Hendrick Potgieter Road in Willowbrook. This route will run towards Zandspruit and pass the Jackal Creek Golf Estate
- The route will then move southeast towards Cosmo City and stop at the proposed new Cosmo City station. It will then move to the new Randburg station, move through Northriding, Olivedale, Bryanston and Ferndal.
- From Randburg, the Gautrain will move to Sandton, where an upgrade to the current station is proposed.
