South African motorists have been warned that they will now face the full might of the law if they have not renewed expired drivers’ licenses before the grace period ends.
This as the renewal extension lapsed on Thursday, 5 May.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula stressed that government will not be issuing further extensions.
Mbalula said traffic authorities will be increasing visibility on the roads once the grace period ends. Motorists who have not renewed learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits that expired between 26 March 2020 up to and including 31 August 2021 will face the full might of the law.
However, officers have been advised to help motorists with challenges who were unable to renew.
Here’s what you need to know:
- If you have applied for your license renewal before the grace period ended, you are allowed to use the expired card for a period of 3-months. Provided you have the receipt of your application and the expired card. As is stipulated by the National Road Traffic regulations.
- Motorists who applied for the license renewals after the grace period will need to take a temporary driver’s licence.
