Haemorrhoids (piles) are lumps that form inside and around your bottom (anus). After a few days, they usually improve on their own. You can treat and prevent piles in a variety of ways.
They’re frequent in middle and older age, and they’re usually the result of years of persistent constipation.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Dr. Daniel Surridge a Colorectal Surgeon to give more insight on Haemorrhoids piles, he gave Kaya 959 listeners information about the causes, treatment and prevention
LISTEN TO THE FULL CONVERSATION HERE:
Dr. Daniel Surridge says haemorrhoids are very normal and we all have them.
“Let’s start off with the taboos around what we do in colorectal surgery, what people don’t realise is that everybody has haemorrhoids, they are completely normal, they are part of your body, they serve a function. They also help you decide when and where to go to the toilet.”
“When we start to have problems is when they complicate when they prolapse or do other things and start causing issues, the whole concept of being embarrassed when we have haemorrhoids is unnecessary because we all have them,” says Surridge

According to BetterHealth.org there are three different types of haemorrhoids:
- internal haemorrhoids – found inside the rectum. They are painless but tend to bleed
- prolapsed haemorrhoids – a more severe and painful form of internal haemorrhoids. These veins push through the anus and hang out of the body, particularly after going to the toilet. Sometimes, the anal sphincter (ring of muscle) can strangulate veins that hang out permanently
- external haemorrhoids – like small haemorrhages (bleeds) under the skin around the anus. They feel like hard lumps.
Prevention and treatment for haemorrhoids
Constipation must be eliminated in order to treat and prevent haemorrhoids.
A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, cereals, and water will aid in the production of soft, regular bowel movements.
Other treatments for haemorrhoids include astringent ointments or suppositories to shrivel the haemorrhoids band ligation of haemorrhoids- tiny bands are put via a proctoscope to reduce the haemorrhoids surgery as a last option.
