In an interview with Mac G this week, comedian Mpho Popps opens up about his constant battle with depression.
Mpho Popps says his father died by suicide and he’s seen what that can do to a family. “For years I’d blame him,” he adds.
His father passed on when he was still young so he had to care for himself. He worked part-time jobs to put himself through university.
The comedian, who’s sought counselling stresses the importance of dealing with childhood trauma.
“You carry it with you and what we start to do is we use coping mechanisms. You drink, you take drugs, you engage in sexual activities, you gamble.
“You do anything but deal with what you are going through and we don’t realise that those patterns and behaviors also change our normal habits.
“Now you are not sleeping properly, now you are not eating properly and that just makes it worse and worse,” he explained.
