Zandile Gumede, the newly elected ANC eThekwini Chairperson, has said she will follow the party’s step-aside policy.
The ANC’s step-aside rule requires party leaders who have been charged with a crime to step aside until their cases are resolved.
Gumede is accused of corruption in connection with a shady R320-million municipal garbage procurement awarded in 2017.
She has entered a not guilty plea.

In a recent interview with ENCA, she confirmed that she will be stepping aside until her name is cleared.
“On the issue of step-aside, it is simple, you get elected and you step-aside. You advise the leadership where you are and things go on. There’s no problem about that.”
“This means I am elected, I am the Chairperson of the Ethelwini region, but because the leadership of the ANC has said I must step aside, I am honouring that. I can’t work against the word of the leadership.”
“But as you can see I am continuously working as a member of the legislature and also as a volunteer of the movement,” said Gumede.
Gumede and many others are scheduled to appear in court later this year on numerous corruption counts.
