We all knew the day would come when one of South Africa’s very own would headline the biggest electronic dance music festivals in the world. Fans were eagerly anticipating Ultra South Africa 2020 for this reason.
He’s no stranger to the Ultra brand, having graced the line-ups previously on other stages. But to be headlining the main stage with the likes of DJ Snake, Dutch legend Afrojack and Steve Aoki is a feat like no other.
With over 50,000 people in attendance at the Johannesburg leg on Saturday, 29th February 2020, it was safe to say that Black Coffee was one of the biggest drawcards to the main stage at Nasrec. Cape Town, the night before was no different, with an equally impressive attendance record.
His set was fire and in true Black Coffee style, the perfect fusion mix of international beats and synergies. His inventive, soul-stirring, deeper electronic sound had the crowd gyrating under the electric sky. Rain did little to dampen the mood, because when Black Coffee takes the stage nothing else matters.
It came as no surprise when his set neared the end that people asked for more. But due to the tight schedule, he couldn’t oblige. There was so much more to him this year than his previous year’s Resistance set. Perhaps, it has a little to do with him pouring his emotions into every beat when he was behind the decks.
He has broken his silence about his impending divorce to Enhle Mbali and the disappointment in his personal life fueling his on-stage presence. Whatever it is that gave him such height at this year’s event, we can only hope it drives him to release more independent music.
With huge success in the past on tracks with Alicia Keys, Shekhinah and his David Guetta smash hit, Drive, a new release of that magnitude is long overdue. We’re here waiting for more coffee, Black Coffee.
