Protests in Soweto have intensified on Wednesday morning with residents barricading roads with burning tyres and rocks.
Bringing traffic to a complete standstill, traffic officials and members of SAPS have been deployed to monitor the situation.
Disgruntled residents are protesting over a lack of electricity. They say there’s been no electricity in Soweto for 5-days.
On 3 February, City Power issued a statement that power had been fully restored to Soweto after an outage due to cable theft was resolved.
However, residents say they have had no electricity for almost a week.
Motorists are urged to avoid travelling to Soweto as many roads are affected. These include areas in Protea Glen, Protea North Protea South, Chiawelo and Klipspruit West.
Entry in and out of Soweto is also affected as Abu Baker Asvat Drive has been blocked off between Chris Hani Road and the N12 with rocks and burning tyres.
The N12 Midway Interchange Protea South Soweto is also affected.
