A former ABSA employee and his girlfriend who are accused of stealing R103 million from the bank are out on bail.
Xolela Masebani (30), and his girlfriend, Athembile Mpani (20), were released on R50 000 bail each on Wednesday.
Appearing at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court, Masebani was accused of stealing R103 million from his employer over three months.
Masebani was hired as a specialist engineer at ABSA and allegedly transferred the large amounts of cash to six different bank accounts.
Between September and December 2021, Xolani Masebani also transferred funds to his girlfriend’s account.
Mpani is the mother of Masebani’s three children and the couple are accused of using the money to buy property, cars and on spending sprees.
The couple are planning on pleading not guilty to all charges against them. Charges against the pair include theft, fraud and contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
The fraudulent transactions were picked up by ABSA’s forensic department.
Meanwhile a third suspect who was implicated in the fraud case was arrested in Cape Town. Gershom Matomane allegedly received close to R74 million.
The case is expected to resume on 14 March.
