Paediatric surgeon Professor Peter Beale has been charged for the murder of a 10-year old child.
The NPA has now also added further charges, including one for culpable homicide for the death of a 21-month old toddler.
In October 2019, Beale performed what he called a ‘routine procedure’ on 10-year old Zayyaan Sayed at Park Lane Hospital in Johannesburg.
A procedure that was later ruled unnecessary by the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
The boy’s lungs collapsed after the laparoscopic operation.
Zayyaan was being treated for reflux and the investigation found that Beale continued with the procedure knowing the risks involved.
Beale was charged for Zayyaan’s murder together with the anaesthesiologist who was in the operating room with him, Dr Abdulhay Munshi.
Munshi was shot and killed before the trial started in 2020.
He was shot six times in the back of his head after his vehicle was rear-ended.
In addition to the death of Zayyaan Sayed, Beale is accused of the negligent death of 21-month old Alissa Strydom.
Professor Peter Beale performed the same procedure on Alissa as he did on Zayyaan which resulted in her death in 2016.
The little girl died the night, at Mediclinic Morningside after her procedure. Her cause of death was due to an inflammation of the heart.
The trial has been set to commence in January 2023.
