A family of 5 have been killed in a disastrous petrol tanker collision just outside Alberton, in the south of Johannesburg.
The accident occurred on Wednesday night after a petrol tanker collided with the vehicle the family were travelling in.
All 5 occupants died on scene after their vehicle caught on fire.
Media liaison officer for the city of Ekurhuleni, William Ntladi said emergency services worked through the night to clear the petrol spillage on the road.
According to Ntladi, the driver and assistant in the tanker were taken to hospital with severe injuries.
The scene has been handed over to necessary authorities for the removal of bodies and for an investigation to begin. The cause of the crash remains unclear.
As reported by the Alberton Record, the accident meant Swartkoppies and Kliprivier roads may be closed for most of Thursday morning.
Motorists are urged to use alternative routes to avoid delays.
Over 50 firefighters and emergency personnel were on scene to control the fire. Six firetrucks from Ekurhuleni and five from Johannesburg were deployed.
Unfortunately, there was nothing they could have done to save the occupants of the vehicle as the fire had spread too quickly.
