South Africans have until Friday to weigh in on Eskom’s proposed 20.5% tariff hike.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) will be conducting a hearing to reach a decision on how much taxpayers will pay for electricity for the financial year 2023.
Planned increases are set to take place in April with Eskom asking for a 20.5% hike to oversee operations.
To add fuel to the fire, the power utility will be taking the Koeberg power station offline from 17 January for 5 months.
This is to allow for a refuelling process and for extensive maintenance to be conducted. It is estimated the Koeberg’s Unit 2 will be offline until May.
Thereafter Unit 2 will go offline for a further 5 months.
According to Eskom, the effect on customers will be minimal as it is planned for the time of year when demand isn’t high.
NERSA will conclude the application process by 25 February.
