Zandile Mafe, the man accused of starting the Parliament fire has been charged with terrorism.
Making his second appearance at the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Mafe faces a schedule 6 charge for terrorism.
In addition, he has also been charged with two counts of arson, possession of an explosive device and the destruction of essential infrastructure.
Zandile Mafe was arrested shortly after the fire broke out at Parliament on Sunday, 2 January.
According to reports, the state claims that Mafe was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The state confirmed that he underwent a psychiatric evaluation to assess whether he is fit to stand trial, a few days prior to his first court appearance.
The news came as a shock to Mafe’s legal team who felt blindsided by the mental health of their client.
Heading up his defensive legal team is Dali Mpofu.
Zandile Mafe has apparently threatened to go on a hunger strike if he is to be held in custody.
This is a developing story.
