Prison raids
Last month, prison officials confiscated knives, all kinds of weapons, drugs and cellphones during a raid at Western Cape’s Pollsmoor Prison.
The raid formed part of the Department of Correctional Services‘ Festive Season Security Operations.
Correctional Services officials also visited parolees on the day to make sure they were not breaching the conditions of their parole.
Meanwhile, at least 30 cellphones, traditional medicine and other contraband were confiscated during a raid at the Qalakabusha Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal in October.
Department officials said dagga, worth an estimated R12 000 was also found.
DCS spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, said inmates were searched at around 3am.
He said officials were shocked at what was found. He added that it was evident that there were security breaches at the facility.
Just days before the raid, four prisoners escaped custody. Three are still at large.
