Since his interview on The Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30 with DJ Keyez, things between Makwa and Nota Baloyi have turned icier.
Nota is Kwesta’s former manager and former business associate who has since hit back at Makwa’s claims that he was cheated whilst at Raplyf Records.
Things weren’t always this way and Makwa detailed how he lived with him for almost 6-years before their huge fallout.
It all started when Nota and Kwesta wanted to hop on a song Makwa made with TLT. The song was pretty big in Katlehong and Kwesta reached out.
“He looked for me for a while until some guy found me and took me to Leroy. I didn’t even know who Leroy was at the time. When we got there he promised me over 200 000 views and more publicity. Back then I didn’t know much about marketing, it was just us kasi boys doing our thing,” Makwa explained to DJ Keyez.
“We remixed the song Intwe Right and the same night in-studio we did King’s Speech which trended.
The next morning Makwa met Nota for the first time and they fought.
“Nota walked into Sony. He didn’t even greet, he just walked past me as if I wasn’t there. After he heard I’m the producer on Kwesta’s tracks he came to introduce himself. Yeah we fought. The first day we met, we fought!”
The reason things got heated between the two was because Nota was upset that Makwa didn’t include the songs he had selected onto the disc.
“I only copied the ones I produced and not his. He wanted me to copy the songs he recommended for Senzo aka Kwesta and I refused!”
Makwa told DJ Keyez that both Senzo/Kwesta were happy with the tracks he recommended but Nota Baloyi was angry.
“I didn’t even understand Nota’s role in Senzo’s career but I understood later. Nota is the guy who carried Senzo/Kwesta’s career all these years until things separated us.”
Things got worse
Their relationship turned sour after Nota accused Makwa of using drugs, something Makwa expressly denies. The producer who is hitting back at artists in the industry who have cheated him admits to using weed, nothing more.
During the full interview on Kaya 959 Makwa spoke of a deal worth R8 million that RapLyf signed with Telkom to use songs he made for Kwesta in ads.
From this deal, Makwa was paid R300K and had to pay R100K to Brenda Fassie’s estate for sampling her song.
Nota responded to Makwa’s interview on Kaya 959, “Okay, I see why he’s confused… He’s been told lies and doesn’t know what’s what!”
