A Mpumalanga MEC charged with murder and attempted murder has been relieved of his duties.
Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday, Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane said MEC Mandla Msibi was dismissed “with immediate effect.”
She said the decision to release MEC Msibi was taken in light of the serious charges levelled against Msibi.
Mtsweni-Tsipane added that the charges would impact his work and ability to carry out his duties.
The premier said she has known and worked with Msibi for many years and will continue to hold him in high regard until proven otherwise.
Cogta MEC Busisiwe Shiba has been appointed to act in Msibi’s post.
Msibi handed himself over to the police on Monday and was formally charged for the murders of Dingaan Ngwenya and Sindela Lubisi.
The men were reportedly shot dead following a scuffle at Cayotes Shisanyama in August. A third person was wounded in the shooting.
On 17 September 2021 police arrested Joseph Charlie Ngwenya (35) and Tshepo Matsane (30). They both appeared in court at least twice before being granted bail of R20 000 last Friday.
Msibi appeared in court on Tuesday. The matter was postponed until Wednesday. She said a total of five people have been arrested for the shooting.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has since called for Msibi to step down and the party to immediately tackle the issue.
He reportedly further reiterated the ANC’s step aside rule which states that leaders charged with corruption or any criminal activities must step down.
