Michael Waters, DA campaign manager for Ekurhuleni has resigned due to the party’s decision to remove the controversial Phoenix posters.
“As a founding member of both the Democratic Party and the Democratic Alliance, I am shocked and horrified by the weakness displayed by my party this week, over the Phoenix poster matter. The DA’s grovelling apology and decision to take down the posters is appalling, and betrays the heroes who defended lives during the period of violence and looting. I cannot defend or support a party that is capable of such spineless treachery.
Therefore, I am resigning as the Regional Campaign Manager of the DA in Ekurhuleni. I cannot in good faith fight for votes for a party that crumbles in the face of manufactured hysteria about it stating the truth,” Mike Waters resignation letter reads.
The DA came under fire for the election posters that were put up in Phoenix, with the ANC threatening action for the “racially charged” display.

DA Phoenix posters
DA Provincial chairperson Fred Nel, said Waters’ position has already been filled and his departure from the party had been smooth.
Party mayoral candidate in Johannesburg, Dr Mpho Phalatse said the party may not have intended to cause harm with the posters but “should apologise, take the posters down and move on.”
Dean Macpherson, provincial chair of the DA in KZN was said to be the only one who knew about the posters.
The party is concerned that they could lose 50% of black DA voters while at the same time cannot afford to lose 50% of the Indians who will vote for the DA.
