Few leaders can be described as having led their nations with great precision and power. The fifth episode of WHAT’S WRONG WITH GROOVIN? celebrated the life and times of Princess Constance Magogo Sibilile Mantithi Ngangezinye kaDinuzulu, and the incredible mark she has left on our history.
Born in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, in 1900—Princess Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu is the greatest pioneer of classical Zulu music. With a lifetime that spanned some of the most rapturous events of our times, both before and during Apartheid, her repertoire of compositions is a glance into the archives of Black South African history.
As a composer, instrumentalist and folk musician she lived an audacious life that saw her defying the expectations of what it meant to be a woman existing within the confines of royalty in the relentless pursuit of her music, which mirrored her quest to unite her people.
Her mentorship of younger musicians during her time was her way of ensuring that her culture would be passed down and memorialized for decades beyond her existence. Drawing world-wide recognition for her music and writings, Princess Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu became a global household name during a time when Back people were fighting for self-determination in nations all over the world. Her stature drew world-wide recognition bringing traction from music scholars and writers, who travelled from far and wide to document her process and performances.
As a repository of a musical lineage that dates back to ancient times, it is without a doubt that Princess Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu’s musical expertise and commitment to preserving indigenous sounds laid the foundation for many great musicians of our time —who, without a doubt, stand on the shoulders of her greatness.
