Starting her day on 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka and allowing us to decode her is singer/songwriter Kelly Khumalo.
Speaking about her childhood, Kelly Khumalo revealed that she was never her parents’ favourite child.
“They loved me but I think my sister is more the favourite because she is the last born.”
Kelly says her sister got away with a lot of things but it didn’t mean they loved her less.
“It wasn’t even an injustice, I believe that I am that child that portrayed strength and independence as well, so my parents felt that I’d be okay.
“As much as I needed more love I was that child who knew how to care for myself.”
The mother of two doesn’t want her children to grow up the same way.
“I see it with Thingo and I am trying to balance the two. I don’t want the same thing that happened to me to happen to my son. There must always be a balance – so Thingo can’t get away with stuff.”
On the things being said about her
The singer/songwriter notes that the things being said about her by the public don’t get to her anymore.
“It used to, but not anymore. Simply because I’ve owned my place in society. I understand that who I am comes with Inkulumo.
“Whether I like it or not people are going to talk. If people are gossiping about their neighbours in the township what more about me?”
She adds that it’s important to see where the negativity is coming from.
“I can see beyond the hearsay and I understand where it comes from and how to deal with it. Sometimes it is people projecting.
“People are projecting what they are going through and you become a punching back. You need to asses where it comes from before you internalize it,” said Kelly Khumalo.
