A manhunt is underway for two convicted rapists who escaped from the Ngqeleni Correctional Center in the Eastern Cape.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed the escape took place on Freedom Day, 27 April at approximately 15h30.
Siyabulela Khohliso, who was serving a 10-year sentence for rape, and Athini Nothi Mzingelwa, who was sentenced to 8-years for rape, escaped from the sports field.
According to the DCS, additional resources have been deployed in support of the Emergency Support Team of Correctional Services, together with the South African Police Service to hunt down the two convicted rapists.
DCS will also launch an investigation into the circumstances that led to the inmates escape from the correctional center.
“The rearrest of the two offenders is critical at this stage. Members of the public are urged to contact the nearest police station should they come into contact with the two escapees.”
This comes after the DCS has been put under the microscope following the escape of another convicted rapist, Thabo Bester in May 2022.
Bester who was serving a life sentence for rape and murder escaped from the privately run, Mangaung Correctional Center in Bloemfontein.
After faking his death in a prison fire, Bester and his alleged accomplice Dr Nandipha Magudumana were apprehended in Tanzania on 07 April.
The two are remanded in custody until their court appearances in May.
