There’s been an increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Gauteng due to a condom shortage.
The province is supposed to receive 143 072 female condoms and 4,280 772 male condoms monthly, but due to supply challenges there is a shortfall.
While the Gauteng Department denies there is a shortage of condoms, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health, Jack Bloom says it is disgraceful that a common item like condoms are in short supply.
Gauteng Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko assured the public there is enough condoms in the country, despite a shortfall in some parts.
The MEC said the short supply was due to supplier issues as South Africa does not manufacture its own condoms, but imports them from other countries.
“Contract RT75 condom suppliers didn’t have stock to deliver to province (Gauteng) from inception of the new contract in February 2022.
As suppliers were awaiting SABS sample approval prior to bulk ordering from manufacturers.”

As a result, sexually transmitted infections and diseases increased in Gauteng from 5 486 in February 2022 to 6 035 in February 2023.
