SA’s driving license card machine has been repaired and is back in full production.
The production of driving license cards has resumed in full, according to the Department of Transport.
This comes after the department informed the general public in May 2023 that the machine was taken out of service for three weeks to allow for the replacement of a broken part discovered during routine maintenance.
The testing of the machine following the part replacement took an additional two weeks before it was approved to resume full production, according to department spokesperson Collen Msibi.

There have been 350 000 cards in the backlog over the last five weeks.
Msibi said that a catch-up plan put in place by the department will clear the backlog by the end of August 2023.
“This will see an increase in production from 60 000 cards produced over the past three weeks during the testing period to about 120 000 cards per week.
“The machine has printed an average 2 850 000 cards per annum in the past two financial years. Since its commissioning in 1998, it has printed over 60 million driving licence cards,”
“The department is currently working on the process to introduce a new driving licence card as approved by Cabinet in August 2022. The new driving licence card will be launched before the end of the current financial year.” said Msibi.
