Rwandan man accused of killing 2,000 people arrested in Paarl after 22 years on the run.
According to UN prosecutors, one of the four fugitives from the 1994 genocide in Rwanda has been apprehended.
The UN court that has been trying the genocide suspects stated on Wednesday that Fulgence Kayishema had been taken into custody in Paarl, South Africa.
In 2001, Mr. Kayishema was accused of being responsible for the burning of approximately 2,000 Tutsi – women, men, children and elderly – at the Nyange Catholic Church during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
Approximately 800,000 Hutus and Tutsis perished in the genocide.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (MICT), which is situated in The Hague, defined Fulgence Kayishema as “one of the world’s most wanted genocide fugitives”.
“Fulgence Kayishema was a fugitive for more than twenty years. His arrest ensures that he will finally face justice for his alleged crimes.
Genocide is the most serious crime known to humankind. The international community has committed to ensure that its perpetrators will be prosecuted and punished.
This arrest is a tangible demonstration that this commitment does not fade and that justice will be done, no matter how long it takes.” said IRMCT Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz
