Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan has refuted Andre de Ruyter’s allegations of corruption at Eskom, as he appears before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).
This after SCOPA met with the former CEO of Eskom, Andre de Ruyter on 26 April, following his television interview with eNCA, where he made comments that Eskom was a feeding trough for the ANC.
SCOPA has had meetings with the National Commissioner of Police, HAWKS, the Board of Eskom and the former Chairperson of Eskom.
Gordhan is answering questions regarding corruption and maladministration within the power utility over de Ruyter claiming the Minister was aware of the alleged criminal activity within Eskom.
The Minister is also facing further revelations by the former Eskom interim board chairperson, Professor Malegapuru Makgoba.
Makgoba, who backed de Ruyter’s allegations is yet to appear before SCOPA.
De Ruyter, has just released his book, Truth to Power, where he details how he masterminded an investigation into the corruption at Eskom and discovered a senior member of the ANC was dipping into millions of Rands every month.
Gordhan said de Ruyter’s accusations were baseless.
“It’s easy to say Minister so and so is not doing his job, but there are complex processes before decisions are made. On the issue of micromanging, regrettably I’m not an engineer, I was trained as a pharmacist. So, how could I possibly give qualified engineers instructions and micromanage them?
This is utter nonsense from a CEO who thought he was a ‘know-it-all’, and he certainly hadn’t worked in a power station situation prior. I refute any accusations of giving instructions.”
