A picture of newborn babies swaddled in blankets and placed in boxes at the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital is being investigated by the North West Department of Health.
The incident reportedly happened on Saturday 20 May.
Mmusi Maimane shared a picture on Twitter and called for the resignation of the premiere.

The North West Department of Health Spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane shares that the department was shocked to learn about newborn babies being placed in boxes instead of incubators at the Provincial Hospital neonatal section.
The Incident allegedly happened on Saturday and management was not aware of it.

The department says there are standard operating procedures in place that should have guided the hospital to find a solution for the shortage of incubators.
The department apologises for the incident and asks the public to remain calm while it is being investigated.
The procurement of additional incubators and cribs is underway.
