Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, unless you’re Nomfundo Moh, then it’s more sting like a mosquito.
The 21-year old newcomer has taken South Africa by storm with her successful singles. Her latest Phakade Lami has done the most on chart shows across the country.
She speaks to DJ Keyez on The Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30 about taking in her rise in the SA music industry. Nomfundo “Mosquito” Moh as her stage name indicates, may be petite in size, but her voice is larger than life.
With her 13-track debut album just released, the singer is all set to focus on her music career.
The UKZN alumna started singing as a 6-year old in church, taking to the stage whenever there was a school concert or church event.
Her passion for writing songs began when she was 16-years old. The qualified social worker has collaborated with Ami Faku and Sha Sha and grew up being inspired by Brenda Fassie, Amanda Black, Ami Faku and Simmy.
Passionate about helping people with a soft spot for children, Nomfundo wanted to help families and make a difference in her community.
Growing up in Ndwedwe, Kwazulu-Natal, her debut album is a testament to her life. With two meanings, the title, Amagama was inspired by everyone who believed in her and it’s about her proving herself.
Listen to Nomfundo Moh’s full interview with DJ Keyez:
Described as a soulful, deep and spiritual singer, her debut album Amagama was just released a week ago. Dropping on 28 January, Nomfundo is now signed to Universal Music Records.
Actively starting with writing music during the 2020 lockdown, Nomfundo Moh did not expect to blow up the way she did.
“I didn’t start writing music or singing because I wanted to be this household name. When I started, I was just inspired and that’s all it was. I wanted to write and work on my music.”

The humble youngster says she’s not “made it” yet and there’s still a long way to go before she can say that she has hit it big.
“There’s still so much I need to do, there’s so much work that has to be done. My debut album is just the first step.”
Nomfundo Moh is not done yet
Her track Lilizela is a song that touches on love and how sometimes we fall in love and it hurts but that pain is what makes it all worth it.
Many thought that she was throwing her future away by working on her music while studying and told her, “it will all end in tears.”
The single Lilizela is about her love for music and how she was hopeful even when people told her it was a fruitless endeavour.
