Turbine Art Fair 2018 — What to see

By Nomali Cele

The RMB Turbine Art Fair is returning once more to the Turbine Hall in Newtown from 12 to 15 July 2018. Now in its fifth year, the RMB Turbine Art Fair continues to be a space where the public comes to meet galleries and artists making exciting and insightful work. The artists and galleries exhibiting at the RMB Turbine Art Fair are always a great mix of emerging and established and with the works on sale starting at R1, 000, the fair is a great place to start or add onto your art collection.

Make sure you see these artists and galleries exhibiting at the RBM Turbine Art Fair 2018

The Kalashnikovv Gallery is a collaboration space that has been around as long as the Turbine Art Fair has been. It’s space that’s built on collaboration that, according to their website is a, “an independent artist-run space, project space and commercial gallery space.” So if you’re always posing questions to power and structures, go past the exhibition area of The Kalashnikovv Gallery. There’s bound to be more questions and answers for you.

What to do in Johannesburg this Winter, turbine art fair

Installations have been a big part of the fair. For the 2017 edition of the fair, the Casspir project was the talk of the three days. At the festival, something that was symbolic of the apartheid era was made beautiful by tens of bead artists.

This year’s installation is curated by Tamzin Lovell-Miller who believes art matters because “It tells us who we are. Art can be a siren going off to warn us of dangers ahead, or it can be a suspended reaction to events and societal changes, a saturated response.” A featured artist is South African sculptor Samson Mudzunga.

80-year-old Alex-born artist, David Koloane, once said, “Apartheid was a politics of space more than anything…and much of the apartheid legislation was denying people the right to move. It’s all about space; restricting space…Claiming art is also reclaiming space.”

This landscape. This landscape! The Quintessential Metaphor For Life” is a showcase of Koloane’s works in collaboration with LL Editions and is curated by Ruzy Rusik. Kolone’s work depicts black experiences without the outsider gaze. See this exhibition because it’s always a blessing to honour our icons while they live.

The RMB Turbine Art Fair is a family affair

The fair also includes a variety of talks. Kaya 959 MD, Mr Greg Maloka, will also be chairing a talk on passion on 14 July. As you know, they are never too young to get started on their way to loving art, why not take your children along to the art fair and sign them up for the Children’s Walkabouts happening on 14 and 15 July? Walkabouts are grouped by age with 6 to 11 year-olds being in one group and children aged 12 and up being in the other.

And when you are done with the walkabouts, you can visit the Imbali children’s area where all manner of arts and crafts activities will be available to children between 3 and 12 years old. The Imbali craft activities will include beading, clay, painting and more.
