South African comedian and Daily Show host Trevor Noah today launched the Trevor Noah Foundation for education.
The Trevor Noah Foundation is a non-profit organisation that equips orphans and vulnerable youth with the education, life skills, and social capital necessary to pursue further empowerment opportunities after matric.
Speaking at launch Trevor Noah highlighted the importance of education.
“With this organisation, we want to bridge the gap between the education children get and the opportunities they get in return. These are pieces we need to put together in order for us to move forward. It’s all good to be educated, but we’ve seen this not only South Africa but the rest of the world, that people with education have no skills and no know-how. You can be book smart but if you don’t know how to apply it and don’t have access to the application it’s a waste.”
The Trevor Noah Foundation plans on investing in three priority areas: psycho-social support, skills development, and career guidance. Partnering with government schools, researching innovative approaches, and mobilising philanthropic capital, with the hope to drive sustainable change that improves the lives of the most vulnerable youth in South Africa.
The event was attended by key role players from the education and youth development ecosystem of South Africa. The foundation has a strong focus on children in high schoool in grades 9-12.
