Here are some of SA’s greatest sporting moments post-1994:
1995 Rugby World Cup Victory
Just a year after the end of apartheid, South Africa hosted and won the Rugby World Cup in 1995. Under the leadership of captain Francois Pienaar and the backing of President Nelson Mandela, the Springboks’ 15-12 victory over New Zealand at Ellis Park became a powerful symbol of national unity.
Bafana Bafana’s 1996 African Cup of Nations Win
Two years later, South Africa celebrated another major victory when Bafana Bafana lifted the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy on home soil. Led by captain Neil Tovey and the late coach Clive Barker, the team defeated Tunisia 2-0 in the final at FNB Stadium.
Caster Semenya’s 2009 World Athletics Triumph
