In a tribute to the late Clive Barker, the legendary coach who led Bafana Bafana to an Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1996, the South African Football Association (SAFA) inaugurated the SAFA Clive Barker Academy on Thursday.
Held in Nasrec, South of Johannesburg, the event was inaugurated by SAFA Vice President Linda Zwane. In her opening remarks, she focused on a central aspect of the Association’s vision: the advancement and nurturing of football within the nation.
“We are pushing two main agendas – being women’s football and youth football. It is critical that in line with these two agendas, our coaches are educated and skilled to be able to meet the international standards of these areas of football, and today’s launch speaks about that,’’ said Zwane.
Jack Maluleka, Chairperson of the SAFA Technical Committee, used the occasion to offer a heartfelt tribute to the beloved coach, Clive Barker, whose enduring legacy includes steering Bafana Bafana to their Africa Cup of Nations victory. Barker passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, after a valiant struggle against Lewy Body Dementia (LBD).
Walter Steenbok, SAFA’s Technical Director, expounded upon the Clive Barker Academy’s mission, emphasizing its significance in the realm of football development. Steenbok also unveiled a momentous announcement: the forthcoming hosting of CAF A License Diploma courses by the Association. Marking a pivotal step, the first CAF A License Course is slated for November 2023.
