Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, stole the spotlight at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards on Monday evening in Marrakesh, Egypt, as he clinched two prestigious awards.
The 32-year-old was honoured with the Men’s Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year awards, making history as the first South African to receive the latter. He also became the second Premier Soccer League (PSL) player, following his teammate Denis Onyango, to claim the Interclub Player of the Year title.
Williams’ achievements reflect a standout year of performances. He played a pivotal role in leading Mamelodi Sundowns to the semifinals of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League, guided Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and helped Sundowns secure their seventh consecutive league title during the 2023/24 PSL season.
Accepting the awards, Williams expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who have supported him throughout his career.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank my family—my parents, my two siblings, my partner, and my kids—for their unwavering support throughout my journey. I am deeply honoured by this recognition from CAF. It has been an incredible year for me, but none of this would have been possible without the players, coaches, and technical staff who have been by my side. I hope this achievement inspires millions of South Africans to believe in themselves, push boundaries, and remember that their dreams are valid,” said the Gqeberha-born star.
