Tuesday, 07 January 2025, marked a significant milestone in the history of Kaizer Chiefs as the football club celebrated its 55th anniversary.
Kaizer Chiefs was founded in Phefeni, Orlando West, in Soweto. The club’s chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung, expressed his gratitude and pride in how far the club has come.
“It invokes a sense of deep satisfaction and immense pride as we reflect on the journey that has brought us to this point—an odyssey filled with passion, patience, dedication, and resilience,” he said.
Dr Motaung noted that when he and his fellow founding fathers established Kaizer Chiefs in 1970, following the formation of Kaizer XI, they envisioned more than just a football club.“We sought to create a beacon of hope and unity for our community during the difficult times of apartheid in South Africa. From those modest beginnings in Soweto, we aspired to build a legacy that would transcend football—a heritage rooted in the rich culture and spirit of our people. The dream was to provide a platform that would empower and inspire not only players but also our community and supporters, whom we regard as the heart and soul of the club,” he said.
Dr Motaung also thanked the club’s loyal fans for their unwavering support.
“Our supporters have remained steadfastly loyal through thick and thin, celebrating our victories and standing by us in challenging times. To the loyal Amakhosi faithful who have been with us since the beginning, and those who joined our journey later, your unwavering commitment and passion have been instrumental in making Amakhosi the most supported club in South Africa and one of the biggest in Africa. You are the ones who turn our home and away games into a sea of Gold and Black, creating an atmosphere that few clubs can rival. This is why our mantra for this season is ‘Always Home,’ because we feel at home wherever we play.”
As part of their 55th birthday celebration, the chairman extended an invitation to all supporters to join them at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening when the team takes on Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership.
“It is a fitting occasion to honour our rich history together, and we encourage everyone to don their Gold and Black colours with pride and come together to celebrate this important milestone with us.”
To show their appreciation, Kaizer Chiefs, in partnership with SMSA, has made tickets for the evening’s match available for only R30.“This significant saving is a gift to our loyal supporters who are always there for us and wish to share in this momentous celebration. Your presence in the stands means the world to us, and we look forward to seeing our stadium filled with the Amakhosi spirit, uniting as one force to cheer our team to victory.
“As we look back on our journey, we celebrate the remarkable achievements that have defined our institution. From our early successes in local and continental competitions to our recent accomplishments, every victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players, coaches, and staff. We have laid a solid foundation that enables us to continue striving for greatness, always keeping the Amakhosi spirit alive,” expressed Dr Kaizer Motaung in part.
