Kaizer Chiefs has handed club legend and captain Itumeleng Khune a one-year extension on his contract which was due to expire this month.
The new contract will see Khune play for Amakhosi for one final season. The forthcoming season will be the 20th for Khune at the club, a record for the Soweto side.
The 36-year-old spent five years in the Chiefs development structures before being promoted to the senior team in the 2004/05 season, aged 20.
The club notes that while Khune will be involved in training and preparations for matches as a player, he “will also use this year to broaden his technical acumen, as he transitions into a new coaching and ambassadorial role working with the marketing division at the Club.”
Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr. hopes Khune will pass on his experience to the younger players.
“It is remarkable that Itu, at the age of 36, has been with Chiefs for over 20 years. It speaks to his love for the game, dedication, hard work, and commitment because very few achieve this feat. We hope that he gives it his all in this final season and shares his valuable experience with the younger players in the team,” said Motaung Jr.
Taking to social media, Khune thanked the club for the opportunity to live out his dream.
“Charity begins at home, I am who I am today of the opportunity you gave me Dr Motaung, you have taught, developed, and nurtured me to be the humbled leader I am today. I’m grateful for trusting me with the brand for 20 years,” wrote the player.
